Friday, 5/9 (Ballingeary to Bantry) Cork County

Today we know will be short and fairly sweet because we are close to Bantry.  After a short stop at Gougane Barra for photos, we head for the long ascent of the Pass of Keimeneigh.  Once through the pass we have a wonderfully sunny descent of nearly eight miles.  The views are grand with great vistas and green fields dotted with sheep.  By the time we reach bottom, however, the sun has disappeared and the rain begins to fall.  We duck into a grocery and buy post cards and a couple snacks.  At Ballylickey a pub situated on a river and the edge of the Ballylickey Bay draws us in for a beer.  It is a mere three miles to our B+B from that point and a total of 22 miles for the day.  Nobody is at the B+B when we arrive, so we set up shop in the sun outdoors and wait for Ursula to find us about 1½ hours after our arrival.  The B+B is quite clean and there are wonderful views of the mountains and Bantry Bay.  Mike scouts out the town, and I remain behind to write and sip tea.  This looks like a good base for a couple days - although the town is crazy with festival goers (Mussel festival).  However, the weather may keep us indoors; it's cold again, rainy and blustery - a terrible combination for peninsula biking!

We walk into town for dinner and afterward check out the band shell.  The music, two violinists and a guitarist, is excellent, but about every 10-15 minutes the rain falls.  We keep ducking into store fronts and once have coffee and dessert to get out of the rain.  Our walk home is wet, and we expect to get soaked - the sky has turned completely leaden.  It is dark and very unpleasant.  We await the morning with great interest.  Maybe indoor sports tomorrow. (861 miles)
